Gary Jefferds
Executive Chef

Growing up in the country setting of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, Gary Jefferds had an early appreciation of fresh vegetables and herbs. Working by his grandfather's side, Gary would help to cultivate the family's vegetable and herb gardens, harvesting the fresh produce used in family meals.

In high school, Gary distinctly heard the culinary call. He spent his evenings and weekends working at local catering events and learning as much as he could about the professional preparation of foods. His appreciation of the culinary arts grew and he looked forward to taking his education to a formal training level.

After graduating high school, Gary enrolled in famed culinary school, Johnson and Wales University. To help pay for his education and further his practical experience, Gary accepted a position at The Old Grist Mill restaurant in Seekonk, Massachusetts. Working full-time, attending school on weekends, and being a young father, Gary had more than enough on his plate.

Gary's hard work and dedication quickly paid off. After five months at The Grist Mill, he was promoted to the company's flagship restaurant, The Capital Grille in Providence, Rhode Island. Gary excelled at The Capital Grille and was soon promoted to Sous Chef, then to Executive Chef. Gary enjoyed the art of cooking, but also discovered that his talents extended beyond the kitchen. Gary took on the important task of training the company's newly-hired restaurant managers and chefs on the high standards and practices of The Capital Grille.

Two years later, a chef's dream presented itself. Former Capital Grille boss and good friend, Chef Jaime D'Olivera, asked Gary to help head the kitchen of a new, world-class steakhouse on the waterfront in Newport, Rhode Island. Gary accepted the challenge and welcomed the chance to return close to home.

Gary accepted the position of Executive Chef of 22 Bowen's Wine Bar & Grille. Alongside fellow Executive Chef Chris Ferris, the two have become leaders in the Newport dining scene.

Gary currently resides in Portsmouth, Rhode Island with his wife, Jane, and their three daughters, Ashley, Jessica and Samantha.
